Chicken is considered a healthy option in comparison to red meat. It is one of the most valued culinary dishes which are liked among people of all ages. It is lean meat, that is, it contains high amounts of protein and less amount of fat. Apart from protein, chicken is rich in minerals like calcium and phosphorus that help to keep our teeth and bones strong. Chicken also contains a nutrient called magnesium that helps to relieve PMS (pre- menstrual syndrome)  symptoms among women who experience painful periods. It also aids in controlling the mood swings during periods. Men should also consume chicken as it is rich in zinc that helps to regulate the levels of testosterone. Chicken provides us with nutrients like tryptophan and vitamin B5 which helps to reduce levels of stress and tension. Also, chicken soup is used as a home remedy for curing cold and cough, flu and other respiratory infections. Chicken is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids and is rich in vitamin B6 which helps in preventing heart diseases. It also contains vitamin B3 that helps in functioning of the nervous system properly and also aids in reducing tiredness. Consuming chicken in a healthy way also helps to keep our blood pressure under control. Red meats, such as beef, lamb or pork, contain high levels of cholesterol and saturated fat in comparison to fish, chicken or vegetables. So, eating chicken or fish helps to reduce the level of cholesterol and development of heart diseases.

To cook chicken in a healthy way, make sure you cut off all the fat that is not good for your heart health. These fat deposits look white in colour and they should be removed first before cooking. To get the maximum benefits of chicken and to absorb all its nutrients, marinate the chicken first with healthy spices like turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder. It will also make the chicken tastier. The longer you marinate, the tastier it will be. You can either cook it in a frying pan or in a pressure cooker to make it extra soft.

In my recipe, I have used capsicum to make the dish more flavourful and delicious. Capsicum, when combined with chicken, makes the food healthier and tastier. We love capsicum in pizzas, chilli chicken and in many more dishes. This healthy vegetable is used in different types of dishes across the world. This flavourful vegetable can be found in different colours and it is also known as bell pepper.

Capsicum has a number of health benefits. Lutein and zeaxanthin- carotenoids found in high amounts in capsicum, may improve eye health and may help to lower the risk of visual impairments. Moreover, bell peppers are also a good source of iron, so, people who have iron deficiency, should consume this vegetable to prevent themselves from anaemia.

Here, I would like to share a healthy chicken recipe that is not only finger-licking and mouth-watering but is high in protein and has numerous health benefits. It is an easy recipe that you can quickly remember and also takes less time to cook. The ingredients you need to prepare this recipe are as follows:

Ingredients:

  • 250 gm boneless chicken pieces
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp cumin powder
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • 1 capsicum, cut in cubes
  • 2 tsp onion paste
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 tsp refined oil
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tbsp curd
  • salt to taste
  • a handful of coriander leaves

How to prepare the chicken:

Firstly, take some water in a bowl. Check the quantity of chicken and then add water to it. For 250 gm chicken, you will need two to three cups of water for boiling the chicken. Place the bowl on the stove. Add ½ teaspoon salt and a pinch of black pepper to the chicken. Bring it to a boil. Black pepper is optional. If you do not want to add black pepper, you can skip that. I personally like the hot and spicy taste of black pepper. Black pepper has a lot of health benefits and should be added to our regular diet. It has antioxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. After you have boiled the chicken, strain the water and let it cool. If you are fond of eating boiled chicken, you don’t need to cook anymore. Just saute the capsicum cubes with 1 tsp refined oil and  add a pinch of salt. Add the boiled chicken and toss the chicken with capsicum. And your food is ready to serve.

Another way of preparing this chicken is written below:

After the boiling of the chicken is done, let it cool and then marinate the boiled chicken pieces with onion paste, ginger-garlic paste, curd, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and salt and keep it aside for at least an hour. After the marinating of the chicken is done, our next step will be cooking the chicken. Add refined oil in a frying pan and toss the chicken pieces. Add salt according to taste. Now, add 1 tsp refined oil and toss capsicum in a separate frying pan. Add a pinch of salt and ½ tsp black pepper powder (optional). Mix the chicken with capsicum. Now your food is ready to serve. Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot.
